Kathleenen- I thought the pup i got a good pedigree i had papers for hip hd the score for sire were32 and dame 20 which is acceptable but yet my vet said he was horrified at these hip scores as the breeder hadnt done everything to prevent the incidence.

Doodledog - Of course, HD can occur in dogs where the parents have exceptionally good scores so low scores are never a guarantee, but it certainly loads the dice in your favour.

You have an alternative, if you import your dogs from any European breeder you will be importing dogs where the history of all the dogs ancestors hip scores can be seen going back decades and whose ancestors for decades have ad to pass intensive health tests before a fit for breeding licence is granted for your breed from its breed registration club.

I have Dobes, European. In the case of my current bitch if I wanted the hip scores of every single dog born to an original pair of her ancestors in say 1976 I can trace the hip scores of every single pup born and which is a part of her ancestry and which was entered for the fit for breeding test. Some dogs would have been kept as non breeding dogs and these would not have entered a fit for breeding test, apart from those I could trace every single dogs hip scores over a 30 year period – EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE THOUSANDS OF THEM.

Every breed registration club makes every working breed of dog an have a pup registered as a pedigree dog unless the parents have passed the minimum allowed for its hip scores, there are some variations from one country to another but they are only slight variations. It is compulsory.

I cannot interpret the HD figures/scores from the the European measures but Germany and Austria they are allowed HD free or HD1.1. thats in the European system of measurement and for Dobes, any hip scores above those the dogs have failed the fit for breeding test and pups cannot be registered with the breed registration club and no registered pedigree is possible (KC here).

Newfies must pass a fit for breeding test HD is one compulsory test others will be relevant to the breed, you could start checking through Norway or others – Danish and Norwegian Newfi clubs below. You don’t have to accept high risk dogs and if you speak to some of those breeders I think they will simply be in a state of disbelief if you tell them the standards here, it is not within the European psychi to comprehend these KC standards.

Im no kill joy, but this time of year is no joke for us animal lovers.

It goes on before Nov 5th and they are still going off now Nov 11th till 12 at night. Took my dog out thinking it was done and dusted a lovely stary night then , BANG! Shocked I and my dog Izzy jumped and that was it. Poor dog was so scared I was nearly dragged on the road as she was so desperate to get away, I dont mind one night a year I can prepare my dog. But it seems to go on and on, then it will be Xmas then new year, then someones birthday. I do think there should be a law against any fireworks going off at times other than Nov 5th. Its llike living in Beiruit.

Thankfully once in the house and we have the TV on she calmed down. Unlike my other Dobie he was a nervous wreck all night howling.

Someone said - You cannot blame the KC for what unscrupulous breeders and farmers do

Not only can you put the blame at the door of KC - it is directly their fault. Do you understand anything at all I have written about all countries and breed registration clubs in europe?

Although the average hip score for Newfoundlands is 29 (or was the last time I checked), that doesn’t mean that it is ok to breed from dogs that have a score of around that number.

IMO, only dogs with a score significantly below the breed average should ever be bred from. Otherwise no improvement in the state of hips in the breed will ever be achieved. And of course, there is more to breeding quality dogs than just hip scores…so with Newfoundlands, i’d be looking for excellent hip scores, elbow scores, heart tests and preferably cystinuria testing in the parents as well as excellent temperament before considering buying a puppy.

It is tragic that you lost your puppy at such a young age because of HD but if breeders will persist in breeding dogs with hip scores near or above the average, the situation will never improve.

Of course, HD can occur in dogs where the parents have exceptionally good scores so low scores are never a guarantee, but it certainly loads the dice in your favour.

Hi-

I’m new to the site so don’t know what to expect. I have an 11 month old golden and I’m wondering when his fur will grow in. He has lab-like fur. I met both of his parents and they have the fur!!! Any advice?

Hi, I own two whippets, I would love to find a picture/image of my whippet ‘ringmore eminence gris’s’ father who is a lure coursing champion ’shoalingam sovereign’. We have been lucky enough to stay in contact with the breeder of his mother who still has his sister so we have visited them which was great. It would be wonderful to see if my whippets father is as handsome as he is!!!
