An interesting thread on the excellent DogForum.org bemoans the practice of free ads promoting dogs for sale with very few strings attached.

This thread tells of a 6 year old Corgi being put up for sale due to an owner’s change of circumstance.

I think dogs are oppurtunists, naturally carnivores but will eat anything really

and it would seem there is some general concensus that dogs can actually be vegetarian but they may not always thrive as such.
